5/12/2023 0 Comments Aurora stanley robinsonIt’s hard to summarise Aurora’s story without spoilers, so I’ll limit myself to saying that its apparent simplicity is deceptive. In the hands of another author it might amount to tedious specifying and dry-as-interstellar-dust worldbuilding, but Robinson makes it come thrillingly, grippingly alive. This artificial mind is happy to provide great scads of data about every aspect of the ship. Indeed, Robinson foregrounds the bare facts of this voyage by giving most of his narration over to the ship’s central computer as it painstakingly works towards a de facto Turing test pass. Tau Ceti has many planets, around one of which is a moon with good levels of oxygen and no indigenous life: a perfect blank slate for new colonists. The ship has been flying for 160 years and is now approaching its target system, undertaking the ticklish business of slowing from 0.1-of-light-speed to a more manageable velocity. Inside are 12 separate ecosystems, from tundra to tropical, each with their own human population, maximised for diversity of flora and fauna. Her world is two huge wheels, spun to imitate gravity, fixed around a long central axle aimed at the star Tau Ceti.

These tales (the title story grew into the novel Shoeless Joe, which in turn was the basis for the film Field of Dreams ) are best when they venture into the fantastic and the narrative supersedes heavy-handed description and shallow characters. Walter Ives Institute for the Emotionally Disturbed, trying to convince the staff he really is crazy. A widowed father, visited by a childhood friend with rapidly dissipating magical powers who needs his help for one last trick, commits a series of small crimes and ends up in the J. An aluminum-window salesman who routinely picks up women while traveling on business, inventing new identities for himself and for them during whatever time they have for escaping from everyday life, meets someone who instinctively knows how to play the game, and his ordered existence is threatened. Most of the stories in this collection by Kinsella are about men grappling with significant life choices and often blurring the line between fantasy and reality in the process. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Cinder book seriesCaught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world's future. To research The Kingdom, Robert and his wife Sandi took their family to live for eighteen months beside the Red Sea in Jeddah. The Kingdom, a study of Saudi Arabia published in 1981, is similarly acknowledged as required reading for businessmen, diplomats and students all over the world. Published in 1977, Majesty remainsĪcknowledged as the definitive study of British monarchy - a subject on which the author continues to write and lecture around the world, appearing regularly on ABC's Good Morning America and on CNN's Larry King Live. He is the author of numerous international bestsellers.Īfter writing his first works of historical biography, Robert, Earl of Essex and Sir Walter Ralegh, Robert wrote Majesty, his pioneering biography of Queen Elizabeth II. Robert Lacey is a British historian noted for his original research, which gets him close to - and often living alongside - his subjects. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Madhouse rob thurmanI'm ridiculously in love with □ Robin □ and his nonstop sexual, hilarious, crazy antics. Five stars isn't enough." 5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars is not enough FebruBy Michael Eckhardt - I have no idea how this series isn't more popular but I have book 2-9 and with every dangerous adventurous journey I go on with the Leandro's brothers, I fall more and more in love with them and I have to admit Robin is so the love of my fictional life! I have fictionally become the man to be his personal body guard and basically just to pursue him in my daydreams! LOL. Horror and humor exist side by side with seemingly little effort. More exotic, fresh monsters, more drama, more humor, more snark, more werewolves, more violence, and much more puck. Elkhart sums up this story perfectly for me by commenting, "Madhouse has everything we've come to expect from Rob Thurman, just more of it. The world of his imagination is so refreshing and I'm so excited about this series!!! - Mr. I'm impressed with the rainbow coalition of the character races, as well as the diversity of horrific monsters Mr. And Niko and Cal are a more believable duo as brothers than Sam and Dean. I feel as though I'm listening to an actual TV series that's so much better than Supernatural. I'm in awe of how he can easily switch his voice from one character to another so smoothly and quickly. Andrews is incredibly amazing in his narration. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Queenie kordaOberon was actually the daughter of an Indian mother and British engineer who worked on the railroads - a fact the actress was able to hide by weaving an elaborate made-up past, even going as far as having her mother pose as Oberon's maid or "nanny." In Princess Merle (Coward, McCann, 1983), biographers Charles Higham and Roy Moseley, intrigued by Merle Oberon's evasiveness when questioned about her early life, unearthed Oberon's birth certificate in Bombay, not in Tasmania where Oberon claimed she was born to English parents traveling through Australia. It has everything, in fact, except an editor's touch, which is amusing since Korda himself is the editor in chief of the very house which, through an affiliate, is publishing the 650-page Queenie.īut a novel packaged as a blockbuster with a huge paperback sale is not insignificant, and predisposed readers may find Queenie's multitude of sins deliciously sinful - the chocolate box of poison that Korda left out of his celebrated Charmed Lives. Queenie, a very thinly disguised portrait of film star Merle Oberon, suffers - or flourishes, depending on your point of view - from ladle after ladle of Hollywood necrophilia and Dallas/Dynasty wish-fulfillment fantasy. WITH MICHAEL KORDA, nothing succeeds quite like excess. 5/10/2023 0 Comments My cross to bear bookTracking delivery Saver Delivery: Australia postĪustralia Post deliveries can be tracked on route with eParcel.
