Mumbai, as it had since been renamed, was a turbulent city of massive proportions a city of incredible diversity marred by complex sectarian strife a city of incredible poverty co-existing with astounding wealth a city with so many people packed together that it defies its own boundaries a city so complexly human it becomes a metaphor for humanity itself. Growing up between worlds, Mehta, an investigative journalist, returned frequently to Bombay to report on it, finally moving back, with his entire family in tow, in 1998. Part memoir, part investigative journalism, Maximum City is as engrossing as it is insightful, and as absorbing as any novel.īorn in Calcutta in 1963, Mehta moved to Bombay, as it was called then, as a toddler, and nine years later moved to New York. Today, Maximum City stands as one of the great urban narratives of any city. Eight years ago, Suketu Mehta published one of the great books about Mumbai (née Bombay).

Near Conch Bar, the trail tends to be packed dirt, but it gradually turns rocky and sandy further along. The trail surface conditions vary a huge amount. The main beginning of the modern trail starts at the coast near Conch Bar Village, but two trailheads also start off the paved road into Middle Caicos, and one near the Dragon Cay Overlook at Dragon Cay Resort. The current Crossing Place Trail only covers a small portion of the original path and deviates a little in places from the original. The paths were re-cleared and guide signs were added. In the late 1990s, the Crossing Place Trail was refurbished by local volunteers and the Turks and Caicos National Trust. Over time, the trail fell into disuse and was overgrown by vegetation as the use of power boats was introduced to the country over the last several decades. The Crossing Place Trail offers many breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs of Mudjin Harbor. 5/13/2023 0 Comments The complete book of josephusThe sources of knowledge that we have of this war are Josephus's account and from the Talmud (gittin 57b) and in midrash Eichah. It was later translated into Greek, probably under the supervision of Josephus himself. The book was written about 75, originally in Josephus's "paternal tongue", probably Aramaic, though this version has not survived. As an original reference, The Works of Josephus. It is a description of Jewish history from the capture of Jerusalem by the Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 BC to the fall and destruction of Jerusalem in the First Jewish-Roman War in AD 70. The outlook of Josephus, a late-first-century Pharisee and historian, on Jesus and the New Testament documents is enlightening and provocative. Josephus’ first work, Bellum Judaicum ( History of the Jewish War ), was written in seven books between ad 75 and 79, toward the end of Vespasian’s reign. In 1833, Charles Darwin was astonished by an animal he met in the Falkland Islands: handsome, social, and oddly crow-like falcons that were "tame and inquisitive. “Utterly captivating and beautifully written, this book is a hugely entertaining and enlightening exploration of a bird so wickedly smart, curious, and social, it boggles the mind.”-Jennifer Ackerman, author of The Bird Way “Deftly intertwine natural history and human history, with insights and lessons that go far beyond the subject birds.”-David Sibley, author of What It's Like to Be a Bird An enthralling account of a modern voyage of discovery as we meet the clever, social birds of prey called caracaras, which puzzled Darwin, fascinate modern-day falconers, and carry secrets of our planet's deep past in their family history. And since the neutrino is one of the strangest and least understood of the known elementary particles, this is fertile ground. Its scientific goals span not only astrophysics and cosmology but also pure particle physics. IceCube is also the largest particle physics detector ever built. In 2010, it detected the first extraterrestrial high-energy neutrinos and thus gave birth to a new field of astronomy. It employs a cubic kilometer of diamond-clear ice, more than a mile beneath the surface, to detect an elementary particle known as the neutrino. Amundsen-Scott Research Station at the geographic South Pole, IceCube is unlike most telescopes in that it is not designed to detect light. In The Telescope in the Ice, Mark Bowen tells the amazing story of the people who built the instrument and the science involved. IceCube Observatory, a South Pole instrument making the first actual observations of high-energy neutrinos, has been called the "weirdest" of the seven wonders of modern astronomy by Scientific American. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Toni jazz“Angered by my inability to summon suitable language,” she writes, “I threw my pencil on the floor, sucked my teeth in disgust.” Sth. She’d already picked a time period and mapped out a plot, “read issues of every ‘Colored’ newspaper I could for the year 1926” and knew each character as well as an old tattoo, but she couldn’t “locate the voice, or position the eye.” How could the narrator elude her when the story was so clear? “I know this woman!” she kept thinking. IN THE FOREWORD to the 2004 Vintage edition of “Jazz” (1992), Toni Morrison writes that it was her body that started the book - that the first lines, like so much of the best music, were born of a physical expression of frustration. |
